Vehicle Accident Situation Assessment

In the series of 9 posts in which we will look all the aspects of what to do and what not in a vehicle accident, this one is the second of them. The first of this series was Hit and Run Law and Lawyer. In today’s post we will discuss the situation assessment of a vehicle accident.
For me, sitting in front of my laptop under very comfortable conditions, it is very easy to say that you need to be focused and present minded to assess the accident you have just been through. Obviously I am not the one who just saw a speeding vehicle coming right towards me and thought that the end of my life has come and I am going to die. I am also not the one who experienced the impact of the collusion with that vehicle which exploded my wind shield on me and left me with awful injuries. I know that keeping the advice to stay calm is very hard between the turmoil of a vehicle accident. But what you can do which is a practical way of describing my advice is that you need to get over the shock of the accident as soon as possible and get your senses back for the things you need to do for minimizing the damages caused by this undesirable incident.

Medical Condition Evaluation:

After getting back your senses you need to evaluate your medical condition. Obviously if you went to an unconscious state only to wake up in a hospital room, you will not be able to do all that but if you were conscious, it is required that you assess your medical condition. If you are severely injured, and can feel that you have injuries on your head, neck or spinal cord, try not to move and wait for some help to arrive. Because trying to move in the scenario of having injuries on these parts of body can go worse if not handled properly. You may have to move even with these injuries in the situation that urges you to move immediately out of your car, for example if your car catches fire. In that case you need to move out of your vehicle immediately to a safer place.

In case of a serious accident which has left you with bad injuries, you can take comfort from the fact that in these severe accidents most of the work will be done by police. You need not to worry about anything, police will work out everything for you and you can get the report from them later to report to your insurance company and your vehicle accident lawyer or attorney.
In most of the cases the vehicle accidents are not that severe to make you unable to move so in most of that cases you can move around to do the assessment of the accident. Take few seconds to feel your medical condition and to see if you can move, if you can get out of the car then what next you need to do is totally dependent on the circumstances of the accident.

Prioritize your strategy after the vehicle accident:

You need to prioritize your strategy and see what is most urgent. It can be helping a badly injured person, calling an ambulance or police etc. Usually people who have witnessed the accident will come to help you and others involved in the accident. When many people come at once and try to help the situation many a times the most important thing is left aside for instance people may start helping injured persons and all will assume that someone might have called the ambulance. To avoid situation like this you better take charge of the situation and put the help party on tasks. You can ask few to divert the traffic from the scene; if you still have your cell phone working with you, call the ambulance and police or ask someone to do that. Keep comforting the injured through some of the helping people around. However while all this is happening you should be observing the accident scene and should try to make your mind for the chronological order of happenings which will help in police assessment of establishing the responsibility for the accident. This will eventually help you in giving details to your vehicle accident lawyer or attorney for a better compensation for your damages.

To your safety
